Meet John Thomas, The Mad Hedge Fund Trader
John Thomas is one of the founding fathers of the modern hedge fund industry. His career began in Tokyo in the 1970s as a research analyst and correspondent for The Economist and the Financial Times — one of the first Americans to cover China during the Cultural Revolution, interviewing figures including Deng Xiaoping, Margaret Thatcher, and Ronald Reagan. In 1983 he moved into investment banking, and in 1989 set up the first dedicated international hedge fund, which became a top performer in the industry. He later served as a director at Swiss Bank Corp overseeing its Japanese equity derivatives portfolio, sold his fund in 1999, pioneered fracking technology in Texas and Colorado, and returned to active management after seeing the extraordinary opportunities created by the Great Crash of 2008.
He founded Mad Hedge Fund Trader with a single goal: to bring the techniques and strategies of the world’s most successful hedge funds to individual investors, so they can manage their own money more profitably. Every morning, five days a week, John shares his global macro analysis, specific trade alerts with defined entry and exit points, and a risk framework built on 50 years of operating at the highest levels of international finance. Every trade he recommends is one he makes with his own capital. In his spare time, he climbs mountains, flies aerobatics in antique aircraft, practices karate, and collects vintage wines — which may go some way toward explaining the name.
